Summary: Sanofi Pasteur (formerly Connaught Laboratories) has partnered with governments, academia, and other collaborators to research, develop and manufacture vaccines in Canada since 1914. The Company employs over 1,100 people and invests approximately $100 million in Canadian vaccine R&D. Sanofi Pasteur is the vaccine division of the sanofi-aventis Group, which employs 2,000 people and annually spends over $180 million on R&D, making it the top R&D investor in Canada for the innovative pharmaceutical industry and the 12th largest private sector investor overall. Sanofi Pasteur supports initiatives which broaden the criteria and eligibility for SR&ED tax credits, and encourages the federal government to create a more competitive environment for R&D by strengthening intellectual property protection. The company's submission identifies strategic procurement – the potential for Canadian governments to "pull through" R&D by purchasing Canadian innovation – as the most significant policy tool available.
