Summary: The Government of Canada plays an important role in fostering an economic climate that encourages business innovation, by providing funding through tax incentives and direct program support to enhance business research and development. Canadian businesses, in turn, are spending nearly $1-billion a year on university R&D — more than most of the developed world on a per capita basis. Canadian companies tend to do more of their R&D in universities than do companies elsewhere (G&M Feb 10, 2011). However, despite some considerable investments in innovation, results are still mixed and would benefit from developing a more comprehensive and integrated system for Research and Development support.
