Summary: Canadian Universities perform very well when compared to pier universities around the world and contribute enormously to our economy through the development of talented people and basic research. Our challenge in Canada is to increase the level of private sector R&D, recognizing that business R&D investments favour applied research and naturally seek the best return on its investment, often short term. SMEs are particularly vulnerable and challenged when it comes to R&D investments and for that purposes, the NRC-IRAP program can play an expanded role in serving SMEs with increased links to universities. At McMaster University, we believe that we need a range of programs to fit the innovation cycle from basic research to deployment, and that the Tri-Councils should offer an integrated set of programs that support all stages of the cycle rather than a single program.
