Summary: The mining industry is likely to remain a major contributor to the Canadian economy and is recognized as a world leader. Canada has a historical record of innovation in the mining industry, but the current capacity for R&D, innovation and education in the sector has declined substantially. The industry faces major challenges, particularly in the areas of power, water and people. This represents an enormous opportunity to focus Canada's emerging skills in these areas towards mining issues and hence insure the ongoing success of our domestic industry and the global competitiveness of our companies. The Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) is a new pan-Canadian, multi-stakeholder group that offers an opportunity to address fundamental issues related to mining. Industry-government-academia collaboration and focused funding are required to support this initiative.
