Submitter(s): Tourangeau, Robbin

Summary: Representing Ontario's 21 universities with over 335,000 full-time undergraduate and 45,000 graduate students, the Council of Ontario Universities (COU) advances higher education through advocacy, research and policy development. Not only does 43% of the research that is undertaken on university campuses in Canada happen in Ontario, in 2008, Ontario universities and affiliated research hospitals generated $604 million in research contracts, with the value of these research contracts increasing by over 30% between 2007 and 2008. Ontario's universities are proud of the contribution that they make to Canada's social and economic success and are committed to enhancing university-industry linkages. They believe that by strengthening existing Federal R & D programs and reducing administrative burdens, Ontario universities and Canadian businesses will have better tools to increase business expenditures in Research and Development, thereby making Canada a world leader in this area.
